This is an exuberant, essential conclusion to Mitch Rapp's first years - a relentless thriller...
“Life often has a way of bringing the most tragic and the happiest things to us at the same time.”
Have you ever wondered how life has a way of bringing the most tragic and the happiest things to us at the same time? There is never time to digest one before the other is pushed in, so we must learn how to juggle the two. That is the canvas of The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman. The book opens with a massive conflict of feelings as our known characters plunge into a new chapter. Joyce is excited about her daughter's wedding, Joanna. Her mind is filled with a whirlwind of flower shops, nail bars and that ridiculous cake bill. 'It's just eggs and sugar and a bit of marge, isn't it?', she thinks. At the same time, within the same circle of friends, Elizabeth is silently grappling with the enormous silence of her deceased husband. That mix of the momentous and mundane, the thrill of new love and the ache of loss, is what preconditions a story that is both more about human hearts than the mystery at the core.
For me, what makes this book genuinely unique is how it balances high-stakes thriller and deep character exploration. The author is the best at creating perfect mysteries, like when Nick Silver, the nervous wedding guest, told Elizabeth that his car had a bomb. The prologue also sets a frightening background story, where a mischievous dark-web company called 'Boom or Bust' plants a specially-made bomb on the target in exchange for about GBP 27,000.
That quickly transcends to an interesting storyline with a cold storage vault, a sophisticated security compound and a 6-digit code that cannot be cracked. Nevertheless, the pulse-throbbing story does not overwhelm the roles played by the characters. That was amazing. Additionally, I loved how the novel spreads this exceptional threat into relatable, normal lives. Elizabeth's grief is shown with beautiful, heartrending genuineness. She 'doesn't want real life to creep back in because the one thing Elizabeth knows about real life is that Stephen is not in it.' The situation, though, urges her brilliant mind to get back into action. Also, observing her inspect suspects is a pure joy. Joyce's diary matches this depth, which provides levity and, at times, real tears, precisely in her emotional recollection of taking her daughter down the aisle to, of all things, 'Backstreet's Back.'
The only fault that I cannot ignore in this brilliant novel is that perhaps the world is so full of people that a new reader may feel that they have just stepped into a late party. The plot has an amazing list of repeat support characters like Donna and Bogdan, and also the devious and recently paroled criminal Connie Johnson, who spends most of her time training Tia, her protege. To long-time fans, watching these threads weave is an unconditional delight, and it is a very dense world to enter for the first time. This is barely a criticism, and more of a tribute to the author's amazing ability to create a world so real and interconnected that you can even imagine yourself moving into Coopers Chase.
The book is, to put it first, a must-read gift to those who are already core fans of the series; it is a rich extension of a story that all of us have grown to adore. New readers will not be disappointed either, but I would suggest starting from the beginning of the Murder Club Mystery series to enjoy the abundance of emotions presented herein in full. The Impossible Fortune is best for those who like character-driven mysteries, quick thinking, and the ability of the story to make a person laugh on one page and cry silently on the other. Accordingly, this book is a flawless blend of heart, humor, and a truly captivating plot, which makes me declare it 5 out of 5 stars.
