Darkstocking

By TOM KLEHM / Reviewed by: Amanda Foster

The author creates a bright secret world with rituals, strange signs, flickering candles and hidden rooms.

Some stories are meant to entertain, some to disturb, and some attempt to do both at the same time. Darkstocking: Codex Tenebris - Book One by Tom Klehm is a book that fits well in the latter category. The novel takes the reader to a world of prohibited rituals, prophetic omens, and shocking transformations. It is centered around Candace Blanchard, a young woman with a scarred past who finds her destiny connected with an ancient one. Directed by a secret society of women, she has to take on her position as Darkstocking, the Domina of a destructive oracle. Throughout her journey, she experiences a number of rituals and revelations that confuse the line between power, corruption, and desire. Blending fantasy and horror with uninhibited exploration of taboo themes, this work is not suitable to the weak of heart.

This book thrives at world-building. The author creates a bright secret world with rituals, strange signs, flickering candles and hidden rooms. It is described so vividly that the reader can almost smell the weird incense or herbs or feel the stone's texture. Another key strength revolves around Candace's character arc, and her change into Darkstocking. This process shows how she forms a new identity by replacing her anger, fears and doubts with acceptance and confidence. This underscores the price of accepting your fate and the power of self-discovery. Thirdly, the novel exhibits a firm dedication to its themes. It is not afraid of extreme or controversial content, and even though that can polarise the audience, it ensures that the story is going to be remembered. Last but not least, the presence of mythic and occult allusions gives it deeper meaning. The connection between Candace's personal struggles and demonology, prophecy and cosmic uprising makes the difference.

However, Darkstocking is not flawless. Its main weakness is that it relies on overt sexual material. Although it is clear that sexuality is part of the curse and prophecy of the heroine, the extent and vividness of such passages may overshadow the main story. Sometimes, the erotic elements seem to substitute for character growth or the storyline, which may disappoint readers who are more focused on the fantasy and horror elements. Another concern is pacing. Long passages of ritual description, enhanced by repetitive imagery, drag the story along. The middle of the book in particular feels stretched. The third weakness is the supporting cast. Although Candace, Darkstocking, is a well-developed character, some of the other characters like Cucia or the other sisters appear one-dimensional as they exist to serve the plot rather than provide much depth. Lastly, the heavy occult allusions can be confusing to those who are not well versed in demonology or esoteric culture. What gives ambiance might become a needless hindrance to enjoyment.

Collectively, Darkstocking: Codex Tenebris - Book One is a bold, provocative dark fantasy. It manages to create an atmosphere of immersion and nightmares and introduces a protagonist whose metamorphosis is intriguing and frightening. However, its prolonged exposure to erotic horror dangerously shifts the emphasis from story to spectacle. I would rate this book three out of five stars. It is not going to attract the average fantasy reader or a person who does not tolerate graphic sex or taboo topics. On the other hand, it is explicitly targeted at extreme horror, gothic erotica, and occult fantasy lovers, readers who enjoy exploring the most dangerous boundaries of imagination. To anyone who wants a shocking, intense, and entirely unconventional story combining myth, horror, and forbidden desire, Darkstocking provides exactly that.
