Love and Life

By Kellyann Chippendale / Reviewed by: Elias Fontana

It has a Paris and Renaissance-esque connection that enhances the book's tone and gives it a passionate, eternal echo.

There are days when we need words to help us heal, grow or simply to make us feel less isolated. This book masterfully does that. Love and Life l'Amour et La Vie by Kellyann Chippendale is a beautiful collection of photos and poems on loss, love and self-discovery. Kellyann was inspired by a childhood desire to get her poetry published, and her mom's encouragement to go to Paris. These memories shaped how she wrote this book. One of the notable poems, born from her seventh-grade assignment, shows that emotions and dreams stay with us forever. She reveals a bit about herself through warm glances at the beauty of nature and love, hoping that her readers are inspired and touched by her words.

The book drives the nail into raw emotional feeling without exaggerating it. Kellyann's voice is genuine and she can hold a calm, direct conversation. The book is also augmented with pictures of her adventure, which combine text and images to stir real feeling. It is a very interesting read, as love, growth and beauty are intertwined throughout. She has a Paris and Renaissance-esque connection that enhances the book's tone and gives it a passionate, eternal echo. Bonus: it is bilingual, as each poem is provided in French and English, which offers a romantic and lyrical touch, reminding the reader of Parisian flavor.

I like the book's emotional honesty and visual appeal, but it has its flaws. First, I understand that every poet aims at simplicity, yet that feeling does not always land in the collection. Some of the poems are deeply touching and the rest feel more like personal journals than fully shaped verse. A stronger editorial touch might bring the words closer, the images into sharper focus, and the whole together. Furthermore, certain images are not fully connected to the poems they are matched with, but seem more complementary than dialogic. A better pairing of theme and image would contribute to coherence. Lastly, the bilingual form is beautiful, though readers not well versed in French might appreciate brief contextual notes. With more visual-textual interaction, more poetic boldness, and more careful editing, the book may transcend its tenderness into something more radical.

I would give this book three out of five stars. It is ideal for dreamers, literature fans, and people who want to be healed mentally through the combination of images and words. It will strike a chord if you are fond of deep poetry, self-expression, and rich language. The collection is both universal and personal. The author's work demonstrates the healing power of creativity, in which words can spark, connect, and change lives. The careful combination of photographs and poems provides a real aesthetic experience, perfect as a present or souvenir.
